it depends... You can only put food into your inventory if you use the 'make...' command when your sims are cooking. That allows you to put as many plates of food in your inventory as you want, by picking them up with the hand tool and dropping them in your inventory. If you use the 'Have...' command when cooking you can't put the food in your inventory - you can only eat it. Alternatively, you can click on a plate and have your sim 'put leftovers away' so that you can eat it again another time. (I think that option comes with Seasons) Any food that you grow or fish that you catch should automatically be put into your inventory when they are harvested/caught.
