    Puter Issues

Hey guys. Just to pick at the technological minded's brains for a bit, what exactly will happen if I press System Restore? What will I lose, what will stay? Should I, Shouldn't I?

My computer has been playing up quite a bit recently, and I figured this may be the easiest way to go about it. For example, when I started it up today, a blue screen greeted me and said something about an error, make sure all recently installed hardware and software are done so correctly...

This doesn't happen all of the time, but it happened quite a bit today. I do get other errors, but it's late and I can't remember them all at the moment. If someone could give me a hand, that would be great.

    Thanks from me.

Oooo - Ouch! Sounds like you might need a Reinstall to me - which is a PAIN and HALF, and usually ends up being the waste of an entirely good weekend!! This is why I left PC Land and moved over to Mac Utopia! (Sure I have to wait for the various Sim EPs to be ported over, but I'd rather do that than reinstall my operating system every 6 months, which is what it was beginning to become on my old laptop!)

Anyway, before you do ANYTHING, make sure you have backed up ALL important files - especially your SIMS! Not knowing any details regarding your set-up, I can't really help you with details. That should really be covered in your user manuals, or any of a million PC books available.

As I said, just make sure you've backed up everything, and also that you have the installation discs and codes (Serial Numbers, passwords, etc) for all of the software you've installed since getting your PC...And then be ready to settle in for a LONG day of reinstallation! (It's a ROYAL pain - but on the bright side, after it's done, your system should be a lot snappier - At least until you need to reinstall again!)

Hopefully others with more recent experience with the PC side of things have better advice, as I will admit, my experience was pre-Windows XP...

Thanks for your help Sacha. Just another quick question though. Is there any way of checking to see what won't come back if I do a system restore? I mean what I will have to reinstall?

System restore, restores system files. It does not change any documents or files. If you don't like what system restore has done you can revert it back before the restore.

The BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) means either a system file is unstable or a hardware issue.

If you still get the blue screen, take a photo of it with a digital camera and post it here. If it's a software problem it could be easy, if it's a hardware problem, you might need to take it to the local computer store.

The blue screen comes and goes, it's very temperamental. I last got it on Wednesday and haven't seen it since, without me doing anything. Will do though, if it returns.

Well, what do you know. After weeks of not having the BSOD I get it twice in one. Luckily my puter started up fine after a restart. Here's a pic.
