    Switch Failure

<div style="color: #000080; padding: 2px;">Switch Failure</div><div style="font-size: .9em; margin-bottom: 12px; border-bottom: 1px solid #000080; padding: 2px; border-top: 1px solid #000080;">Thursday, August 14, 2003 by Kevin Stange</div><div style="font-size: 1em;">The switch into which our servers were connected failed earlier this evening resulting in approximately three hours of downtime. During an attempt to repair the partial failure, our host located a more serious problem with the switch which required its complete replacement. The problem has since been resolved and everything seems to be back up and running. We apologize for any inconvenience this downtime caused you. Our host has extended its apologies as well.

We are still scheduled for a brief outage of the control panel, Saturday morning at 12 AM Eastern Time to apply H-Sphere's latest patch. Please try to avoid accessing the control panel system at that time to avoid any possible problems. The patch will not change anything that will be noticeable to most users.</div>

Kev, did the power outage take you down last night, cos I saw that new york and that coastal area had major problems. I was thinking i hope kev is ok, cos he cant do anything with simgames, and i thought even worse if the server had been affected.

    That shoudn't happen...

There should be backup generators etc in a data center....

btw, I'm almost sure it was a guy messing with his stereo....
and then all the light went off
of course he was working at night.. for some strange reason

Yeah, I lost power for about 6 hours. Parts of my town less than a mile away had no power for nearly 24 hours though.

Everything seems to be basically back to normal around here for now.

The server wasn't affected. I know they have redundant power backups, but I don't remember hearing about any problems in Chicago anyway.

Or a massive demand on the power grid. It happned whjere i live, cos of a massive demand on the substation in the estate where I live, because of it. The whole of Longmede went down, and they had to bring in a massive deseil genorator to power the estate, but that could not even cope with the demand, so we had another blackout, this one lasted 3 days, which put the estate into panic. Anyway, they came and replaced the substation, and the power was restored 3 days later. I had lights, due to the where I live, we have a genorator and emergency lighting
