Greek House I was wondering, after you apply for charter (and are accepted) how do you get other students to join your frat?
You make friend of them first, then you ask them to pledge. I sually do it the other way around. I play the sim I want to join and have him use the phone to make friends with as many frat-house member as possible then use the phone to join a greek house. When the guys show up in their togas the result is a foregone conclusion. They run up to mailbox, cheer a bit and then say congrats, you're in and they go again. All is needed then is to move out and move into the greek house.
Pledging is a trial in both senses. The pledgee might get bored and leave, this can happen because the other greeks can order pledgees about and make them do stuff (influence to's are free ... doesn't cost influence points to make pledgees do stuff). The pledging period has to be completed before the pledgee becomes a full member.
It's one of those slightly weird American things that grew out of small (and somewhat sincere and genuine) beginnings in the mist of time and is perptuated by the needs of of an otherwise egalitarian society to have layers of social class where none otherwise exist. Europe has royal families, titles and patronage; the US has Hollywood, frats -- with jewellery --, and ... patronage. Read the Wikipedia article on Fraternities
And that's only the tip of the iceberg. I've come to the conclusion that human beings crave layers. Or maybe they just crave gossip. Social layers and gossip go together like beer and pizza. Americans like to believe we are free to move up and down the layers, although it's a lot easier to go down than up. :sigh:
