Uhm. Actually I've checked it with Tim :D And I was right. Bowling can be called 10-pins too.

And your description Fae is correct.
Furthermore. If you knock down all 10 pins in the first frame it's called a "strike". Hehe Al Bundy bowls... :classic:

There are championships in this as well. I've seen it on Eurosporrt and it has always been called Bowling there. So now we know. :classic:

I thought that the game originated in the rear room of some public houses in England and that it was originally called Nine Pins. I could be completely wrong.

There is a version called "nine pin", different rules, not as popular here (USA).

And no, it isn't the same as golf, for one thing, golfing doesn't happen in teams, lawn bowling does.

Lawn Bowling. Well that's something else than Bowling. I have never heard about Lawn Bowling before. :)

The idea that anyone would ever have thought of hitting the 'woods' with a club, or anything else, would have turned my father's stomach. Bowls was (and is) done on an area of grass which is kept, naturally, in perfect condition. There is a gutter all round to catch balls which have too much power on them.
There are two types. One is a flat piece of grass and you bowl in straight lines, always straight. I think that that is mainly a 'southern' sport (not Texas - southern England).
My father used to go 'crown green bowling'. Here the 'green' (the area allocated for bowling) was higher in the top centre than around the sides, the slope being gradual. The 'jack' (the bowl against which you had to make your own woods go closest) was smaller than the main woods. You borrowed a jack, but a good player never borrowed woods - he took his own, in rather a beautiful little case. You bowled the jack and whereever it landed was the aiming point - ie the jack itself. You then bowled your own bowls, allowing for the 'weighting' which was on one side of them.
The nearest at the end was the winner.
My father did win a trophy once, but he wasn't too brilling really. I was absolutely useless and I only played a couple of times when I was quite tiny. I don't understand it - I didn't have a 'paunch' in those days.

That second bowl sounds like a game called Boccia or it's very similar anyway. :classic:

*smiles, shakes his head and laughs* bowling, the ten-pin, there are variations however, such as nine pin, 5-pin (i think) and 7-pin. the other things are either variations of golf or other sports, any for of bowling is played with a ball ranging in wieght from 6 - 16 (YABA regulations) on a wooden, plastic, or another material wich is oiled down to let the ball spin and curve

this is what i'm sanctioned with and should help give you a better idea...
