Cant Build Since Patch The build button doesnt work anymore since I patched the game. I can clic on it and select things like flooring or wall but the cursor remains a cursor, no nothing!!?? what happened? I can still buy things, and everything like direct Sims etc..
Best advice is to reinstall the game. This should not affect your saved families (though I haven't verified this for myself! So best advice, as always, is to back up before you do anything. (All the saved games are in My Documents\EA Games|The Sims 2\ by the way) NOTE that if you reinstall you will also need to re-apply the patch, this will best be done before you restart the game.
you have GOT to be kiddin me. Thats the best advice ya got? The only advice? sheesh. EA is having all sorts of probs with this patch. Ive had probs with their games before, and this game is like 3.5 gigs! that creates huge gaps in your hard drive and you have to de-fragment. if thats the only answer for every problem, I'll stop at uninstall, and skip the CD down the street.
Sheesh yourself. What where you expecting, a miracle? The patch messed up your files. Bad stuff happens. You suck it up and reinstall. That's the standard methodology for repairing a corrupted installation. If you don't like the advice get tech support at Maxis to help you and good luck to you. If you don't like optimizing your drive, go and complain to Microsoft about it. Or get a Mac. Just don't come here and be snide to someone who gave you good solid advice that you happened simply not to like.
Hmm ... seems to me like you ignored the preparation advice to defrag or otherwise oprimise your hard drive before installing. Also you knew the sys req's before buying (eg disc space) so why did you buy knowing this? The game's size is mostly determined by the high byte-age given over to the bitmaps that hold the textures and colorations of the various objects and clothing. Without that the game's movie function might as well have been dumped because foreground objects would have been pixellated to the point of nonsense. I consider that there is a good chance that the problem you're having is directly related to the original installation being botched. From memory I recall that installing the game took less than 15 minutes, so what is your problem? Could it be that you are too impatient to set your machine to defrag just before you go to bed? :(
And You didn't explain exactly what "patch" you downloaded. It has been a common problem that people who play pirated versions or run the "No-CD" hack can't build.
It sounds like you didn't remove your hacked objects and mod packages before installing your patch. Maxis always recommends doing this before installing any update or new EP. Once they are installed, the objects and mods can be put back in (but it's best to do it one at a time so that if a problem occurs you can remove the offending mod or object.) But the best thing to do is to save your Sims data and then uninstall/reinstall your game. But make sure that you don't have any nonMaxis mods or hacked objects still in place before you do any updating with Maxis patches.
? I did not remove my hacked items before I installed the patch and it works fine. Fugitivas just take the time to uninstall the game and reinstall it. It does not take long.
I'd say you were very lucky. It may depend on which hacked items you have. However, Maxis recommends that they be removed from the game before updating or installing a new EP. In fact, the modders are recommending that you remove all objects from your download folder before installing the EP. The things made with Body Shop or Homecrafter are ok, but anything using a new mesh or made with SimPE should be removed first. Even the ones which are supposedly compatible with TS2U are recommended to be removed. Once the EP is installed, they can be put back in, although it's recommended that you do it slowly (checking the game to make sure that there are no problems before adding more.) The modders are working hand in hand with Maxis on these issues. However, there have been enough problems in spite of this that they are making the recommendation to remove things while installing. Remember, all the SimPE or mesh tool made things are using beta tools, not full releases. It's best to err on the side of caution.
So, if I remove all my downloads from my downloads folder and temporarily house them somewhere else in my hard-drive when I get and install TS2U, I should be OK? I hope so because I have a lot fo custom stuff installed, and trying to figure out which files were made with homecrafter and bodyshop and which weren't is going to be a titanic mess.
Yes, you can just remove your downloads folder to your harddrive. I've been working a lot with my downloads file lately and I found that I could just put it on my desktop and it works fine. I got a bad file that was making some of my objects not workable, including some of the Maxis things. Bad. I ended up uninstalling and reinstalling twice yesterday before I tackled the downloads. I finally found that pesky bad file, but it took hours. Next time I'm putting all new downloads into a "new download" subfolder until I can run the game and make sure that nothing causes problems. Subfolders are a wonderful thing! The only problem comes when you have things which are installed in more than just the downloads folder. The Color Enabler Pack (CEP) for instance has one part in the downloads but another in the program spot. It's self installing and even with knowing the name and location of the second part, I couldn't find it. (That's one of the reasons I did the second uninstall/reinstall. The first one because I thought that it was just corrupted. But even with that, if it had fixed it, it would have been worth it since it took far less time to uninstall/reinstall the game twice than it took to go through that huge downloads file!)
Now, here is my fear. Kat, I'm hoping you can help with this. What if I just delete all my recolors and start over after the EP? Will it cause my game to crash when it loads up the houses and can't find the missing objects?
If I downloaded the new EP without taking stuff off and it DOES cash should I uninstall it, take everything off and try again? I don't want to uninstall EVERYTHING unless I HAVE to.
Flamey, dear, if you "download" the new EP we will send Will Wright around to your house with a pointy stick and bucket of fish.
I removed my entire downloads file to do some trouble shooting this weekend and I had no problems with any of my houses crashing (although I heard it can theoretically be a problem.) The objects just showed up in their original Maxis form. And when I put the downloads folder back, they then showed up in the downloaded form. However, the same can't be said if you remove one of the Maxis downloads. I believe that they install in a different spot than the regular downloads since they are self installed and I couldn't find them in the downloads folder. (Same thing with the walls/floors. They were there even though I had removed the downloads folder. It was kind of creepy, actually.) And it would probably be more of a problem if you have downloaded any of the new meshes, since there isn't a Maxis equivalent for them.
hummm. Don't have any meshes, I don't think. Everything looks like the Maxis originals, just diffrent colors. I haven't downloaded the new version of Sims PE, so I guess I'll do that and start cleaning out my download files. Besides, S2U will be out next week, and my new video card will be here any day. So I need to be ready!
