RCI's Grandeur of the Seas Crashes Into Dock Royal Caribbean International's Grandeur of the Seas struck the pier in Costa Maya, Mexico, at approximately 1 p.m. (E.S.T.) Wednesday, while the ship was docking in 15-knot winds and a 3-knot current, which contributed to the incident. All guests and crew members are completely safe, and none were injured in the incident. The ship has a football-shaped puncture in the bow, on its starboard side, that is approximately 42 feet long and five feet wide at its widest point. The puncture is in the first deck, approximately five feet above the waterline. http://www.royalcaribbean.com/contentPage.do;jsessionid=0000ofgHfa0OvSXt5hna0ymHMtp:v29bc4qk?pagename=important_updates Pictures!
LOL. I'd love to see the insurance claim form for that. The really funny thing is that "they" are trying to put the blame on the wind and current as though such things are an unusual hazard facing ocean going ships.
You think that's bad? My grandmother has a copy of all these different insurance claims for automobile accidents... shame I don't have a copy of it right now.. Now to be honest, though, I don't think that it's incredibly rare. I belive the Queen Mary did it once or twice... and I know for a fact that Caronia (from Cunard, 1948 into the '60s) did it in New York, and in Japan too (but when leaving. Some sort of lighthouse maybe, though?) She had the largest funnel ever installed on a ship... so it acted as a sail. (this was measured by fore and aft length... not height)
Something like this occured just a few days ago, the Norweigen Dawn hit rough seas and caused flooding and damages to the ship. The people on the trip wanted to have a full refund, but only got half off on their next booking with them. *Its believed that the Norweigen Dawn was to be pictured in a show at 5am the next morning so they went right through the storm to make the deadline*
I knew John was gonna be talking in this thread...lol.. http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=topNews&storyID=8257117
