A Use For Those OFB Impulse Purchases?

A Use For Those OFB Impulse Purchases?

I just held the first of a series of weddings in my Pennfield neighborhood. Mr. & Mrs. Winslow Jarvis were pleased to announce the joining in marriage of their eldest child Lainey to Mr. Ethan Keller, the only child of Mr. & Mrs. Thaddeus Keller. The event was a notable social success even though the groom's father slightly overdosed cake and made a spectacle of himself by showing how not to dance as the pic shows ... that's Lainey's baby sister, Amber DJ-ing, BTW.

Anyway. I was looking through the family's inventories and found the usual hotchpotch of itmes bought in OFB stores and an idea hit me. My newly weds could have it all! It has to be said that most of my OFB businesses are of the home furnishings sort but there was nice toy robot for the firstborn and a fabulous collect of mismatched table lamps. It looked just like a real collection of wedding presents ... the sort we used to get before "Wedding Lists" went all Pescado and stopped being just a guide for friends and rellies of the happy couple and instead adopted the "In Pescado Land Wedding Lists Use YOU!" philosophy. In my day we were grateful to get 23 toasters ... we knew the nutritional benefits of toast and ... sorry I'm rambling again

So there you have it! Don't sell off those useless items from your sims' inventories. Give them away to their descendants as wedding prezzies :D

Great idea, and LOL at the wedding list uses you! People thought we were so weird when we refused to register for our wedding, but we got some very nice gifts anyway.

But ... how do you manage that? If someone doesn't live on the same property, that is. Do you just mean if they do?

LOL ... no I just cleared the incumbent family members' inventories ... anything else would've required a deathly serious amount of forethought and planning and I do that .... :p

That's what I was thinking. I guess you could just load up the bride and groom with stuff to take with them on their new life. They'd have all that plus the 20K for their starter home. I've used the inventories to load up stuff when college students finish Uni. One of mine took a car with him that way. :p

Oh, mine too. I buy them something nice to take with them. My adobe mission had $20,000 just sitting around so I bought everyone a painting for $1,500 to put in their inventory. They can keep or sell it as they wish when they set up housekeeping.

I like the random purchases. My sims sell them, or eat them ... :D Or, if I really like it, just keep them.

My one and only college lot (dorm) has about $60,000 right now. I don't know how in the world they accumulated this much. I never buy them anything, except I re-do their rooms everytime someone new moves in. But the rooms are like 3x3, so there's not a whole lot of money involved there.

I guess I could start buying them expensive stuff. But most of the graduates move back home with their rich families, so they don't need it. And for the ones that do strike out on their own, I really don't want to make it any easier for them. I like some of my sims to have to work their way up.

I suppose I could buy them some nice things and pretend that they were graduation/wedding gifts from the wealthy parents. That I could accept, but they would have to use the items in their homes, not sell them. And no taking the wedding gifts out of inventory before the wedding!! I'm so strict.

    Whoah. You are strict. :p

I buy my college students lots of fun things to play with. I didn't use to let them take stuff with them (well, for a while I couldn't!), but now that they can buy businesses I don't mind giving them a bit of a boost. After all, they earned that money by getting good grades and building skill points, so I feel like they're entitled. Some of my students are slackier than others, of course, and it's kind of a communist situation in which it's all divided equally, but them's the breaks, cowgirl.

Plus, it's taking my sims longer to amass fortunes than it used to. There are just so many things to do other than the daily grind, and so much more to spend it on. With the exception of Lola, who got a boost when the Diva moved in, none of my sims have even cleared $100,000 yet. In my old hood I had several with a lot more than that.

I do agree that once they're rich they get a little boring, but I've got a solution for that as well ... open up an amusement park in your home! (Actually, I've got Sacharissa to thank for that one, she suggested it to me.)

Or, better yet, run your family fortune into the ground with a business, or build an empire that way. Either way, fun ensues.

I had two sims who were really boring and rich buy an apartment building. Now they've got five tenants and no end of things to do.

Just some things I'm having fun with.

Yeah, my college kids don't have that much fun stuff. The best thing they have is a jukebox. They used to have a hot tub but I got really sick of seeing all the dormies in their swimsuits all the time, so I took it away. I'm mean.

I'd prefer them to socialize to get their fun. College is where they make most of their friends and future spouses. I'm letting them choose for themselves, and it really is working. It's fun to put a couple who was going steady in high school in college together to see if they will fall in love again. I had a pair of sisters who fell in love with the other ones high school boyfriend. Funny things happen sometimes.

And I am exploring the idea of using up the fortunes on businesses. A couple of my families can afford to buy the biggest pre-made downtown lots. In fact, Tybalt Capp bought Londoste, it was about $140,000. I wanted him, his wife and their two live-in friends to run it, but due to the thing where they don't work there when you visit, it wasn't fun for me, so I made him sell it back. I'll try again once I resign myself to the fact that I'll have to hire townies.

And yeah, I just downloaded a few city apartment buildings. I'm thinking about who to move in there, but it's going to be really fun when I finally decide.

Oohh, oohh, (dancing with excitement), oohh...did somebody say "apartment buildings"? How do they work? Where are they available for download? I was looking for apt bldgs to come with NL and was very dissapointed.

    :)

I'm feeling lazy, but if you want to read about my apartment building that I built myself, it's in the Porta de Luca, part three thread.

It helps if you have OFB so you can assign apartments (as in lock everyone else out), though I imagine if you used dorm room doors it would work in a similar way. Of course, if you want people to visit you then need to unlock the door ...

I don't see how a toaster makes a good wedding gift. Me, I'd rather give somebody something to properly symbolize their wedding. Something like alcohol, an axe, a razor, a pistol, or a coathanger.

Oh, I see. My fault for not keeping up with the story threads. As an excuse, I just re-read my entire "Falconhurst" (Horner et Onstatt- 'Drum', 'Mandingo', etc.) collection and am taking a break from torn-bodice stories for awhile.

I'm still hoping for some bright soul to create apt buildings a-la Urbz where each apt acts as a playable lot. Maybe in a future EP, eh? ;)
