    Apt. Buildings

I made an apt. building and I used the doors that can lock for each apt. to keep others out. Now my plan is to move different families into each apt, but after bulding the apt. it's worth like 150k! I didn't want to use the changelotzone dorm cheat because it's not a dorm...So how do I have different families move into the different apts. without having the whole building cost so much for one family? Or is this not possible!

In effect it isn't possible. Your best bet would be to have a 'building superintendent' or else a landlord.

Also don't forget that the lockable doors are for individuals only so apts cannot be for couples or families ... for that you would need Pescado's authorized personnel security system and even then you will have sims throwing tantrums when they find a door is locked against them ... :(

I haven't tried making any apartments yet, but would it work if you put a seperate door for each family member entering the apartment? If you had a family of two, you could (in effect) have a front door that someone claims, and a backdoor? A family of three would need three doors, etc, etc...

Again, I haven't tried it, so it's just a theory...

But, as far as getting them to move in initally, yes, you'll either have to use a cheat to get that much money or move in a "dummy" sim to buy the place then merge your families in.

You know, I was thinking about trying that. I was motivated by the $100K + condos I kept seeing at the beach earlier this week. I kept thinking, "Wonder if my sims would like those. I could put on a privacy door and make nice one-bedroom condos with balconies and maybe a pool. . . " I even downloaded some nicer privacy doors, diffrent woodgrains that actually looked like they'd be someone's front door. But then I started thinking about the logistics of it. I'd have a hard time adding people to the household. Would they loose their last name? And if I wanted to move in a poor college graduate and add them to the household? (which was my target population, sortof like my townhouses.) So for now I decided to stick with the townhouses, and keep the condos on the back-burner.

LOL ijR ... it never occurred to me that I could place individual doors for each member of a family.. As far as apts go, though, the greatest limitation is the 8 sims per lot. 2 Families of 4 hardly makes a tower block ...

All the same it has been my wish to create a boarding house ... the reservable and lockable doors, plus the family merging facility, mean that Rigsby's infamously seedy rooming house can now be built ... all I need to do is create the lookalike sims! :D

I also wondered about doing a Sim version of Fawlty Towers ... ;)

Kristal ... sims added to a household via the neighborhood should keep their last names. The rule seems to be that the proposer of marriage is the one whose name is kept when marrying. I haven't done any moving in (of the original in-game sort) so I don't know how that works. Sheesh ... there's so much in this game i haven't done yet. (For example I just had my first sim saved from death today - it came up as a want so I bought her the new scissors to run around with :p

    Hey Mirelly!

The in-lot "move in" interaction works the same as if you'd moved them in from the neighborhood, the new "tenant" keeps their last name. Very cool feature.

Your boarding house should work perfectly! I actually discovered the use of the dorm doors in a private residence just the other night. I wanted to put a computer and pinball machine in my teen's bedroom, but knew that everyone would come in and use it while he was sleeping, so on the offchance that it'd work, I put in a dorm door, had him claim it and kept it locked! It worked like a charm. There's no reason people wouldn't be able to have their own condos if you used the dorm doors as front doors.

I didn't even see any of the other Sims ATTEMPT to use those objects, like they might not even have known they were there?
