Archy and Mehitabel Anyone remember them? A cockroach and a cat. The cockroach typed out his story by throwing himself headfirst onto the typewriter keyboard. Couldn't use the shift key so capital letters and some punctuation was missing. Sometimes I think Archy has joined us here . (Don Marquis was the author)
OMG I LOVED that story. Did you ever hear the musical version? It's very cute. My mom had it on vinyl when I was a kid. I listened to it so much my Dad put a limit on how many times I could play it in a day.
Oi... I think I meant were missing . Just noticed that. No, I never heard the musical version. The book belonged to my mother and I have no idea where it went--probably lost. I wonder if the musical version is available on CD somewhere/somehow.
I've never heard of the story, Lynet, but I agree with you. I shudder to think that one day a post from here will show up in a certain infamous forum on MATY.
"A flea jumped into a lion's cage and bit that lion good, And then he stood on the lion's mangy mane, as a conquering hero should. He said, 'Oh witness, my power and my might, I've conquered that lion with one mighty bite. He does not roar, he does not growl, although his mood is black He's lying there and doesn't even dare to try and bite me back! A mighty flea am I, a mighty flea am I.' Now concerning this flea, one sad thing must be written: That lion didn't even know that he'd been bitten. And the moral of this story is painfully plain: That fleas, like human beings, are silly and vain." Archie and Mehitabel, the musical
"I met a moth the other night Who loved to play with fire He was trying to get in to a hundred watt bulb And fry himself on the wire. I said to him, if you keep that up, your years will be painfully few. Do you play with fire because you like it, Or because it's the conventional thing for moths to do? He looked at me all starry eyed And fluttered his wings as he softly sighed: 'Have you ever seen the secret life of a flame? How many creatures have ever seen the secret life of a flame? We moths would rather see beauty once And then just cease to be Then never see any beauty at all And live to eternity So we wad up our lives into one little ball And into the flame we shoot it all! Into the flame we fly ... what a wonderful way to die.' And before I could stop the crazy little blighter He flew right up to the business end of a cigarette lighter and POOF No more little blighter. Well, Boss, that moth was a fool I guess But one thing I can't deny: I wish there was something in this world that I wanted As much as he wanted .... to fry." Your troubled friend, Archie (also from the musical. I repeated it here because I think it's so cool and not a lot of people have heard it.)
