Cleaning Out Downloads I think I need to clean some stuff out, because my load times are suffering. I am a downloading fool, ya know. Anyone got any comments or input about how many files are too much, or an easy way to clean things out?
I know how your feeling Kristalrose, I looked at my download folder (which now contains 135MB of downloads) the other day and there is way too much in there and i would like to get rid of a few, but then I worry that I might accidently delete something I actually want.... I think I might just go buy some more RAM, that's a much less daunting task .
The easiest way to clean out your downloads directory is to delete it, and then reinstall all of the hacks you actually want. Note that hacks and objects work even when placed in subdirectories, or, indeed, apparently anywhere in the TS2 user directory tree itself! Meaning only SKINS need to be put in downloads, and you can delete those with impunity. I mean, why do you need 300 different skins anyway? You can't possibly manage more than about 100 sims at once...
Yeah, it's skins and genetics mainly. What can I say, JMP, I'm a girl, I like to clothes shop!!! LMAO I knew about the file folders. I don't have too many hacks since I had so much trouble with them when I got Uni. Mainly just a few of yours and Merola's painting. The objects probably need filed, though, I have quite a few recolors.
If it's mainly clothes, you can use either BodyShop or CAS to remove them. When you click on a piece of clothing (in CAS or in the SimBuilding, not creating, part of BodyShop), a little garbage can appears off to the side. If it's something that you no longer want, then click on the garbage can. Bye bye outfit. (You might want to go through all your Sims on your lots and make sure that the clothes they are wearing when the lot is saved are ones you want to keep for sure.) You can do the same for walls/floors and objects. That way you can look at it, decide if you do/don't want it, rather than just having a file to look at. I haven't used it since University (because I wanted to make sure that it was updated for TS2U before I tried it) but the Clean Installer lets you see what it is that you are removing, although it's not 3D as it would be in the game. It shows the bitmap of the clothes and objects instead of a 3D version of it. You can scan your folders that way. You can also use it to organize your things into folders (except for clothes, makeup, etc which can't be in a subfolder.) However, I've found that I'm still not able to get my downloads file down as much as I'd like. (Yes, load times can be atrocious!) Currently, I don't have any of my objects in the download folder. I want to have them all organized and will go through and remove the pieces that I've downloaded in the past which either don't work with TS2U in place, or which I got as part of a set but didn't want that particular item. But that's a big, huge, enormous chore since I, too, get my fun from "shopping" for all the cool Sims things. (And I keep finding new wonderful sites like Reflex Sims. Hmmm. That reminds me. I spent quite a while on a site yesterday that I need to put into the community section.) I don't want to think of what loading times will be like when I do put that folder back into my game.
