Get a new computer? That's not a graphics card. That's a not-graphics-card. Open up your computer and look for a short brown slot that's different from all of the others. If you don't have one, you're screwed. See "Get a new computer". If you do have one, you can consider dropping $100 or so on a new video card.

LOL Pescado. But I do wish you wouldn't beat about the bushes so. I don't see why can't be more direct. :p

Hi, BabyGrl ... to be honest I am not sure what your problem is. Do you have a crappy old computer that won't play the sims (with an Intel(R) 82810E Graphics Controller) or is your sister's computer the one with the Intel(R) 82810E Graphics Controller? Or are you playing on a network? (Is that even possible? Must have a go and see if it can be done ...)

So more info, please. Meanwhile Pescado is right. the 8281 controller is pants as far as The Sims 2 goes. Some players manage with it ... but I do not know how or why they bother. My friend's pre-teen son gave up trying on 12/26 (got the game for Xmas)... they're going thru a money famine right now and the poor kid is saving like a demon to get a better machine.

One way to get a cheap(er) computer is to find someone who knows about computers and ask them to help you build one. You can get the exact parts you want on ebay or on sale at your local computer store and put them in an older machine. That's what I've got. Be sure to pay the nice geek back, if not in money than in something he/she enjoys ... his own copy of the Sims 2, perhaps?

I can't give my old "boxes" away ... monitors are a bit harder to come by but if you watch for sales you could get lucky ... also if you're willing to settle for smaller screens ask around. I'll bet there are businesses in your neighborhood that have monitors rusting in the back room. At least where I live it costs money to take these things to the dump, so you'd be doing them a favor by helping them recycle.
I did buy a wireless mouse and new speakers, but if you're willing to settle for older you can get these cheap too. My whole system, after rebates, and including my shiny new items, was around $350 U.S. That includes my upgraded 160 GB hard drive. Of course, I already had the monitor and got the box for free ... that's the key. Start with a basic freebie and expand from there.

I have no idea, babygirl, I'm in over my head on that one ... like I said, I had help putting my computer together.

Thank goodness for geeks. I mean that term as a compliment. I'm a geek myself, just not in the computer/hardware area ...

A "DirectX 9.0c compatible adaptor" is a graphics card that support Directx 9.0c which is a Microsoft standard library of bits and bobs for handling games expecially the video elements of games.

The Sims 2 is written to require Version 9.0c of the Directx standard and some graphic adapters cannot be ugraded. If you get the "cannot find DirectX 9.0c compatible adaptor" error you should first check with your computer manufacturer for software updates and upgrades. If all else fails go to the Mircosoft Directx Page where you can donwload the latest version of Directx ... but there is no guarantee that this will fix things ... you need to get your computer manufacturer's support for guarantee issues.

    On building computers

babygirl, I'm not sure how much this will help you, since I'm sure your parents probably won't approve of you buying expensive computer componants. LOL But to other people who might read this thread: Surprised By Witches is right. It is so much better to build your own computer if you have the knowledge, both moneywise and in terms of getting what you want. There is a lot of technical stuff you need to know, especially about what componants are compatable, what a "clockspeed" is, and, oddly enough in my way of thinking, the size and capability of your fan.

My BIL builds all his own computers. He's presently finishing up his 3rd one. He keeps re-using his monitor and tower and just keeps upgrading the components when technology changes every few years. This time he finally broke down and bought a new tower, a bright orange one! He is upgrading to a 64 bit system, all the latest and greatest toys, and it's still under $1,000. LOL He has offered to help my hubby build one for our son and help him get it networked, and hubby is thinking about it. If you have the basic tower and monitor, it's not very expensive to buy a new motherboard, memory chips, graphics and sound cards, and whatever else you need. (see, I hear them talk about it, but unless it affects my Sims, I don't really care about all the hardware. LOL I didn't even know what a graphics card was until it affected my game-play!)

Amen to all that Kris. My current computer consists of a mouse, keyboard, speakers, tower, tower's innards, monitor all of different ages, makes and colors. Who cares! It works. Yay!
