I do know that there are still many, many possibilities left open for The Sims 2 and that many people wont have their PCs ready in time for The Sims 3, so I wouldnt see a reason to stop just yet Source: Prima Games Forums
It definitely seems silly to kill a major money maker like the Sims2 a full year before Sims3 supposedly comes outs.
