Household names

  1. Household names

    Hi all

Has anyone worked out how to amend the family names yet?

Basically I moved a sim (Susie Pollock) into a house, then moved her fiance (Sulivan Lowery) in with her. They married and she is now Susie Lowery.

BUT, the house is labeled as the Pollocks... which looks pretty odd seeing as how no-one named Pollock lives there anymore.

Hmmmmmm, actually, if I moved one of them out then the other (the lot is still just a shell so wouldn't have to worry about losing money on the tv's and sofas) I would have 2 individuals called Lowery in the pool... then if I moved them both back in... surely the house would be the lowery household...

But I'm worried to do it, will they get divorced or something if I move one of them out? I don't know about you but I'd be worried if my wife moved out on me (well, if I was married I would). Or in the world of the sims would that be all fine and do-able?

    Thanks in advance.

NO they won't lose their relationships if you move them out and back in again. I agree that it is inconvenient not being able to rename a lot's family name. I have legacy type families that are 2 steps away from the name on the doorbell  (I actually got all confused today and moved a sim graduate in with her second cousins by mistake. Athena Willis's mom and dad are in the Toussaint household ... meanwhile her second cousin is the son of Sarah Zaidi (nee Willis) ... of course they do live in the Willis household. Ach! I think I need to start keeping a notebook.

My frat house is called "The Fosters Family" even though Devlin Fosters graduated a long time ago. He was the charter member of the frat. Yeah, it annoys me, but no, I am not moving them out just to rename the household. I'm graduating them one at a time, and therefore they go back to the main neighborhood with their own last names. :)

Thanks all for your help, the Lowery's now live in the Lowery household.

There was one unexpected (but welcome) side effect to my rearranging, could someone shine some light on this:

Sullivan and Susie were both fresh out of college and both in seperate 'pools' in the sims list ready to be moved in. This means they had 20,000 simoleans each.

As I said, Susie moved in then Sully, meaning my household worth was 40,000.

BUT, now that I moved Sully out (via paper) then Susie out (via neighborhood screen) then moved them both back to the same house, the household worth is now... 60,241! Nothing was bought or sold, no-one went to work... in fact all that happened was they kissed, talked, then read the paper to find a new house.

    Can anyone explain that?

And for my future reference, what decides the household/sims name?
I get that the first 'family' to move into a property names it (eg Pollock) and anyone merged into the house thereafter has no effect on this name.

But how about the actual sims? I made sure Sully proposed and asked for marriage, and I made sure he was first to the arch (as I'd heard that makes a difference), and Susie became a Lowery. Was all that necessary or is it a simple "Who asks who" or such?

Gosh, aren't I full of questions...

Every time somebody moves out, by default, they're given a freebie 20K. This is regardless of how much money that actually have, so some sims get a huge handout of free money for doing this, others receive a paltry and insulting amount.

You can get the "No Free 20K Handouts" hack to eliminate this: You will then receive a portion of the household funds when you move out, which is deducted from the accounts, for better or worse.

As for household names, you can change these by manually hacking their strings in SimPE (moderately complicated), or, with college students, dispatch them from the Neighborhood screen instead of the phone or computer move-out, which lets you pick the name you want to assign the family. I generally go with something suitably plain, like "Students".

You are correct (I believe) that the family name of a married couple is derived from the one who proposes the marriage. (Either may propose the necessary prior engagement without affecting the outcome.)

Pescado has produced a hack that ensures that all marriages result in the family name being derived from the husband.

Look for marriage-traditional.zip in the hack directory (under Armoury)

That will make things much easier. Just one question, I don't have a download folder so I assume I have to create one, is it 'download' or 'downloads' taht I am to name it?

Downloads. And if you've never had a downloads folder and never downloaded any of my stuff, it's a wonder your game hasn't blown up in a big fiery ball that is visible from space yet. Or maybe it has, and you just don't know it.

  10. Lol, that's a little unmodest (is that even a word) :)

I appologise for not utilising your much discussed mods and fixes, I will remedy that today.

What do you recomend I get first, is there anything that is almost essential to the smooth running of this game?

Anything marked as Critical (it's in its own sticky thread in the Armory) is Important. If you don't have these, your game will blow up messily. The rest of the stuff, currently lobbed in a directory blob, ranges from "makes stuff considerably less annoying" to "Totally More Awesome Than You".

Well, gollee, Sarge, I don't have one darned thing like this and my game bubbles along just fine. I must be doing something wrong.

Um, hi, Prankster, I know I'm entering this thread a bit late but the sure-fire way to make sure the sims take the name you want, without hacks, is have the one with the name you want click the wedding arch first.

It works every time. I learned about this after a family ended up with the "wrong" last name ... I don't always want them to take the man's name, so this way, you can choose ...

Someone mentioned a big cash winfall upon moving a Sim in. I've had this happen to me last night.

Zane wanted to marry Jade. Jade was still in college, but floundering along for months as a Freshman. She really wasn't that interesting to play until Zane took notice of her. Anyway, I decided Jade should drop out of college and marry Zane. So, I set him up in a trailer, invite people, set up the arch. Click on it, and then remember when it says "this object does not have any interactions (or whatever the heck it says)" that Jade must transition to adult 1st. So, Zane proposes move in, Jane does the little turn-around, confeetti erupts, and she's an adult, and low and behold, she's also a millionaire!!! Yes, that's right, my poor, penniless college freshman with no job and no money brough in 1,300,000+ in cash! And they live in one of the smallest, most shabby trailers I've ever made. LOL I'm afraid to move them out, afraid the money will fly away when the glitch fixes itself.
