http://thesims2.ea.com/community ?? toooooo slow Is it me or does the http://thesims2.ea.com/community take AGES to load?
I've got a big, shiny Broadband connection and still don't really bother with the official site because it's so **** slow.
It's been slow especially over the holidays. Not only is the traffic volume much higher than most sites (which tends to mean that it will be slow on that account) but also they've been having problems with servers. They were running a skeleton crew over the holidays but after they have finished working on it (which should be over in the next couple of weeks), it should be much better.
It's not so much that page that takes long for me to load, but the actual BBS itself. Dunno what it was about it, but the BBS at TheSims.com seemed so much more.. inviting to me. Of course, it was when it had OT... The combination of the slow BBS and color scheme (seems so dark) have kept me away from the Sims 2 BBS. Of course, I'm not complaining about this. I'm quite happy here
I agree with you John. The TS1 BBS did seem more invintimg somehow. The new one seems to be like a gigantic asylum or Babel ... everyone shouting at once and practically no-one actually having a conversation.
The two communities are very different. TS1 has always had a smaller, more intimate group. Even before OT everyone pretty well knew each other and knew when someone new was there. TS2 is like going from a one room schoolroom to a high school in a busy metropolitan area where there are thousands of students. It has so many people that although some names stand out, the sheer numbers don't allow for the same intimacy. And believe me, it's a bear to moderate because of those sheer numbers. A quiet day there is still busier than the TS1 BBS was on its busiest days. By the way, they are still working on the servers and database. I don't believe that they anticipated the huge numbers of people that they got. I suspect that they looked at the numbers on the old TS1 board and figured that was what they'd get for TS2. But the reality was much, much larger.
Thanks for the news on the servers and database, Kat. That may explain part of my problem... the other part would be the dialup factor. You're right about the intimacy of the TS1 BBS. I wish it were different.. but it's not. I'm just glad that I've come to know more people here to replace the TS1 BBS. The thing that I really miss was the friends I had there. How are SMs Burpie, MsWick, and Katikins doing, anyway? Unfortunately the TS1 BBS seems like a ghost-town anymore...
LOL Kat. I suspect that the Maxoids tripped over their own geekiness. TS2's BBS was always gonna be 10 times busier than TS1's due to the rapid rollout of DSL services in North America and Europe since 2000. It's amusing really. When technology is leaping forwards at unprecendented rates something is certain to slip someone's mind when the plans are being put together.
Eh!! You mean it wasn't slow (for you) six months ago when this was being talked about or it isn't slow now, which it isn't.
That site is slow for me - but I am on dial-up. I could get used to it loading up in the background... but I can't find the Offtopic in that BBS anymore, so I don't visit it much.
The reason you can't find "off topic" is that the Sims official sites no longer have anywhere that off topic is allowed. The closest that is allowed is to talk about the BBS functions. However, the site is focused on the game, not on other topics. However, we SMs have been authorized to occasionally start an off topic thread. These are temporary threads (such as the one which SMMoira started about the Jack Thompson issue, the Shaved for the Cure thread when that campaign was going on, or the various holiday posts.) Usually they are started because one of us gets tired of deleting posts on that off topic subject and so we create one to "bleed off" some of the posting behavior by letting the kids have one place where it's "OK" to do it.
