    Messing with Hair

Hi, I'm new here and would like some info, I looked around and couldn't find anything on the subject of hair, so I'm going to ask.

Is it possible to "mirror" hair. So that the part goes on the other side fo the head?

Also, is it possible to use improper hair on different Genders. What I mean is, can ou use Male hair on Females and vice versa?

One more thing, is there a way to choose the hairstyle of the Sim independant of a hat selection?

    Thanks alot.

The only hair tutorial I know is this one
As far as know most of the folks who make tutorials have discovered the secrets of a particular technique through trial and error ... I'll look forward to you proudly telling us how you figured out a way to change the side of partings! ;)

The hard thing about hat and hair is that they are very mesh dependant.

If you can color it a solid color and still see where the "part" is, then you won't be able to change the part. However, if it is just a matter of shading (not the mesh itself) then you can put the part somewhere else.

But that's also why we are so stuck when it comes to hair under a hat. You can shorten hair, but not lengthen it. You can remove layers but not add. And you can't change a style with pig tails to one with flowing hair. You might be able to get some semblance of pigtails from flowing hair by removing all the hair but a pigtail wide swatch and then artistically putting a braid over that swatch (for the pigtail.) However, I personally feel that looks rather bogus (like the hair where they've done that to make a pony tail in the back.) Each layer is pretty flat so it doesn't have the look of a real pigtail or pony tail when people do that.

But you can certainly experiment to see what you can get. You can also look at the hair from various Simsites to see what I mean about the pony tails looking too flat.

Thanks, That's kinda what I always figured, but was hoping beyond hope there was some way around it.

ut thanks for that tutorial, it didn't really answer any of my questions, or tell me anyhting I didn't figure out already, but it did give me some other ideas on approaching certain styles that I hadn't had before.

But I still need to know if it's possible to use the Female hair on Males and vice versa (IE get the geometry, or "mesh" as you call it on the "wrong" one)

We don't have any way to work with meshes (yet, although the modders are working on it) and that includes switching genders with them.

I guess though you were new, you had more experience than you indicated. I'm glad that the infor gave you some ideas at least.

sorry 'bout that:nervous: I've got a BFA in computer animation, so I'm used to having ALOT more say in the manipulations of 3-d models. which is why I'm a little miffed I can't manipulate hair, shoes, hats and body part sizes (not just boobs  ) with the same ease that I can with the face and head. I also wish that clothing colors wouldn't each take up a style. They should have a style and then a palet of colors to choose from. That way they would need to put more individual styles in the game.

But, yeah I tried altering a longer female style into what I was going for. It came out decent, but the original model for the hair didn't hug the girl's head as much as I would have liked, it looked more like a loose fiting helmet than hair. But all the ones that are long enough and hug the head, have a giant gap in the forehead area and I need her to have bangs. oh well.

plus there's another girl I want to wear a cowboy hat but the only programes hair style that goes along with it is pigtails.

No wonder you're frustrated. I'm a little frustrated by not being able to make the shoulders wider or hips wider (and some variation on chest development both bigger or smaller) but I've gotten used to the idea (since we've known since the downloadable Body Shop came out that it would be this way for a while.)

I'm hoping that when they update the Body Shop with TS2U that they will give us a little more control over the body as well, not just adding the "young adult" age group to it. But that's very wishful thinking.

You may want to get involved with the closed beta testing they are doing at MTS2 for working with meshes. It requires a resume of experience such as using computer animation and SimPE, but I suspect from what you've said that you may fit their requirements. (You wouldn't be the only World Sims person there. JMPescado does stuff over at MTS2 too, although he doesn't do anything with bodies/clothes. I download and do some beta testing, but I'm trying to keep a low profile there. I've got enough work with being a moderator here and on the official Sims lists.)
