Planet Earth I think this show has been shown already in the UK, but I saw the beginning of it last night. The photography is breathtaking. I'm not too keen on Weaver's narration (not a particularly pleasant voice,) but I can ignore it and just watch the films. 5 years in the making? I'm going to have to get the DVD, just to see some of the clips all over again. Way, way too many commercials on the Discovery Channel, though. I'd forgotten why I avoided so much of TV these days.
Probably because the TV and Movie industry employs so many Brit actors as villains, our accent now makes us sound villainous.
ray hasn't figured out how to download to dvd yet so we started taping it, but will probably break down and just buy the set.... I would so hate to be a photographer and not be able to interfere in life and death. ie the little elephant baby following it's mothers footsteps in the wrong direction. I just couldn't do it.
Maybe they did interfere, but didn't show that. That was hard to watch, I agree. I have always believed, however, that most animals don't die easy. They're eaten by predators when very young, or when they're too old to keep up with the herd. I am reminded of the deer that are roaming my neighborhood. We've been seeing more than a dozen at a time in our yard, almost daily. Around here the only predators are bored firemen at the fire station down the road (I've been told they shoot the deer on occasion.) Firemen and cars. That's it. I've seen deer trying to cross the Baltimore Beltway. A few years ago one jumped in from of my car and kicked out my headlight as he ran by and crossed several lanes of traffic. My car was the only one he hit.
that must have been a rush... saw an interview on Oprah with the photographers of Planet Earth, one part they were talking about the artic fox that killed a gosling from the 50 or so thousand around... and how bad they felt til they found out it was dinner for 7 fox kitlets. so you see the need and the balance, but it's still hard when the babies have to die. fantastic photography.
