    Puppy vs Kitty.

Ok, just asking for peoples opinion here.

Recently, we got a new puppy by the name of Mopar, I'm sure you all remember. Well this week I picked up a kitty by the name of Onyx and I was wondering what advice you might have for getting them to be friends? I know, It's only been a couple of days in the house together, but any tips you could give me to help kitty stop hissing at puppy would be great. I think puppy might be going through the "I was here first blues" as well, though I do still pay him equal amount of attention too.

Here are some pics of the two of them.

Well, I really have no suggestions, but I just have to say that I love the name Onyx. :p It fits him. Or her. Is it a girl or boy?

She's a girl. Puppy is a boy and a boy kitty was no option. To much testosterone for my liking ;) .

    How old is Onyx?

If he's older than 7 weeks you may have some time trying to get him to warm up to your dog.

    Added:

As I've found out with my numerious cats if they're older than that they usually are quite timid of dogs. They may accept them "being there" but they won't like it... and if Mopar were to make any sudden moves the cat could attack.

LOL, way to funny. Our male cat (we also have two females) acts like a true man around my boyfriend. When Brandon is at work or not at home he's a big cuddler. But as soon as Brandon walks in the door he pretends to be tough...I think it's hilarous.

Anyway, to answer your other question, just give them time. My parents have a dog and we quite often take all three of our cats to go visit as they only live 1/2 hour away. All three of the cats started by hissing at her, now the youngest goes up to her and rubs her head into the dog's side...it's adorable. My oldest cat Hailee also lived with a German Shepard for her first 6 months and got over the hissing stage at about 2-3 weeks and then just looked at the big dog like she was an annoyance and wouldn't budge even if the dog was about to step on her.

Onyx looks kind of big. Depends on his nature, but as long as he has a place to go where he feels safe from the big bad wolf :p I expect he'll adjust in time. I'm not speaking from experience with cat vs. dog, though. Only cat vs. cat. As old as he appears to be, he might never be fully comfortable around Mopar, just more laid back about it.

My cat hates my dog and my dog is jealous of my cat. They're 17 years apart in age, though, so that might have something to do with them not getting along.

Don't force the issue. Your dog looks pretty mellow. Try holding kitty in your lap at whatever distance the cat will tolerate from the dog and petting her. The dog may inch closer to you, at which point you can encourage him to "think nice thoughts about a pussycat." My dog, for example, knows exactly what "leave the cat alone" means. Knows, doesn't always heed. Poor kitty is ancient, doesn't need the aggravation. I can just hear her. "Kids these days. No respect."

They may never get along, it's really hard to say. Animals have personalities just like we do, and if they don't mesh, they don't mesh. Cats don't often like new cats, let alone dogs, but it helps that doggie was there first.

You could try smearing the dog with cat food but that might give the cat ideas. :p

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I know it's going to take time to get them used to each other. The fact that her tummy is still stitched up from having her reproductive organs taken out may be contributing to her grumpiness at the moment, but then again, I don't blame her :) . I hope they play nice while I'm working tomorrow.

What do you mean? You can clearly see the cat biting the poor dog while it's asleep.

LOL, Flamey. That's doggies for ya ... underneath all the bark and growl they're just big old softies ... but neath the fur of a puddy-tat there lurks a ferocious and merciless hunter-killer ...
