recording, midi ... need new methods

I have Sonar to record midi. It doesn't record drum beats or rythms from my keyboard though. Also I can't record from my other instruments, so I wanted to try to use a mic to record stuff. I have a recording program that streams to a .ra file, but all the mp3 recorders were not free, and most didn't even work for me. It would be cheaper and easier to buy one of those old fashioned tape recorder things. Are there wires that go from a stereo's headphone jack to a pc's mic one? I'm annoyed at how difficult it is to just get a song on my computer. Even when I get a decent accordion recording, the keys clacking on the lack of padding is somewhat annoying.

If you open up your Volume Control, select properties, click recording, and enable all the options, and click okay

it will bring you to a recording panel.

click stereo mixer. Record as much as you want..just be sure you press record, then play whatever music.
