After saving any custom neighbourhoods and my downloads folder to a safe place (so I can add/replace them later), I'd probably just uninstall and reinstall the game. That'll take you back to the original neighbourhoods with the original Sims in it.

I'm not sure an uninstall and reinstall is necessary.

Don't go by what I say yet (I mean wait for some additional information) but I think that if you simply delete those neighborhoods, the game will set them up again for you, because they are original to the game anyhoo.

    Go to:
    My Documents
    .. >> EA Games

Highlight the folder named The Sims 2
    Then click File >> Rename

I suggest naming it My Sims 2

Now start your game up. It will take a little longer than normal becuase it will be making the original neighborhoods.

If you have any downloads they'll be in your My Sims 2 as will oodles of useful stuff and all your old saved games in case you want to go back to them later (you'll have to change its name back to The Sims 2 though)
