Troubleshooting What's the difference in the Pentiums?

    What's the difference in the Pentiums?

    Hubby and I are computer shopping. :D We are pricing new pc's, and have noticed there are two diffrent Pentium 4 processors: Pentium 4 HT and Pentium 4 D. The D had less speed (2. 8 I think, to the HT's 3.0) but it was more expensive. I am assuming that more expensive means better. But, why?

    The one we were pricing also had a Nividia GeForce 6800, 160 gig. hard drive, and Sound Blaster 5.1.

    The entire time, I'm telling Hubby, "Okay, we need this so it will play my Sims better. Just think of all the stuff I can download!! My Simmies will be so happy! :)" I still don't have him convinced. He's buying us this nice updated PC so he can give our son the one we're using now. I guess if we were really great parents, we'd give him the new one, but, well, if he wants a new PC, he can get a job!! LMAO

    So, if I get my way, think it will play TS2 well? Is there one of these pentiums or a graphics or sound card that we really should stay away from? TS2 is the most complex, most difficult program our computer has to run. So, that's the standards we are looking for: if it can play TS 2 well, then it can surf the net and play MP3's with no problem :)

    Well the Geforce 6800 is an awesome card (so long as it doesn't have any giveway extra letters indicating that it's a cheapo verion)

    As for the processors ... the HT is a hyper-threading enabled version of the D. I have no idea what hyper-threading is or why you might want it. I only use AMD so I don't know much about Intel anyway.

    Pentium D = Dual Core Processor
    Pentium HT => Hyperthreading

    Hyperthreading is a virtual second processor core where as Pentium D has two cores within cpu socket.

    That explains why the D is more expensive then. I'd much rather have two real things than a virtual pair ;)

    Even though it's virtual, it behaves like a second processor and however in comparison, performance on the D chip still can be HT anyday :)

    Yes, if you have the cash, I'd definintely go with dualcore now. You'll pretty much set yourself free from upgrading for a few years, plus that Video Card will hold out for a long time.

    If you can wait even more, I'd wait for the next generation of dual core processors from Intel. The ones Intel released are good, but they have significant room to improve :)

    Hehe, thats why getting into the whole PC enthusiast-2 year upgrade cycle is hard. Do you get into it now or hold out for somerthing better?

    I get to hold out :D

    Well...Age of Empires 3 and TS2 are good enough reasons to get into PC gaming now, might as well aling yourself correctly for PCI Express 2.
